Question

How to describe the term "potential energy"?

Open in App
Solution

Potential Energy:

  1. Potential energy can be defined as the energy possessed by a body by the virtue of its position.
  2. It can be visualized by assuming a starting point.
  3. When a body is displaced from this position, the energy imparted on the body due to this displacement is stored in the body as its potential energy.
  4. The magnitude of the potential difference, hence, depends upon the magnitude of relative displacement or the work done to displace this body.
  5. For example, when a ball is lifted above the ground by opposing gravity, it possesses potential energy.
  6. The higher the displacement, the more is the more potential energy stored inside the body.
  7. Another example is a string stretched from its mean position.
