Question

How to find the n-factor of Potassium Permanganate (KMnO4)?

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Concept of n- Factor

  • n-factor is the change in oxidation number per molecule
  • It is used to describe the number of electrons gained or lost per atom in a reaction.
  • In acids n-factor is considered as a number of replaceable positive hydrogen ions per molecule.
  • In bases, n-factor is considered as a number of replaceable positive hydroxide ions per molecule

Step2: Calculation of n- Factor of Potassium Permanganate (KMnO4)

  • For KMnO4 valence factor in acidic medium is
  • MnO4-(aq)Permanganate+8H+(aq)Hydrogenion+5e-ElectronMn2+(aq)Mangnateion+4H2O(l)Water
  • Change in Oxidation State= +7-2=+5

Therefore, n-Factor of Potassium Permanganate (KMnO4) is +5.
