How to find the valency of molecules like oxide hydrogen carbonate?

HCO3 – Hydrogen has a valency of 1 and carbonate has a valency of -2. When both are added we get 1 + (-2) = -1. Hence -1 is the valency of hydrogen carbonate. Valency is the ability of an atom to gain or lose electrons in order to achieve the noble gas configuration.
