Question

How to find the valency of molecules like oxide hydrogen carbonate (HCO3-)

Open in App
Solution

Valency:-

  1. The valence or valency of an element is the measure of its combining capacity per atoms when it forms chemical compounds or molecules.
  2. It is the ability of an atom to gain or lose electrons in order to achieve the noble gas configuration.
  3. The number of bonds that an atom can form as a part of a compound is expressed by valency of the element.

Calculation of Valency of Hydrogen Carbonate:-

  1. In Hydrogen Carbonate (HCO3-) Hydrogen has a valency of 1 and carbonate of -2.
  2. When both are added we get 1+(-2)=-1 should be a valency.

Therefore, The valency of Hydrogen Carbonate is -1.
