Question

How to measure the rate of change of momentum with time?

Open in App
Solution

Momentum

  1. Momentum is a vector quantity.
  2. Momentum is the product of the mass of a body and its velocity.
  3. A body has mass m and velocity v, then the momentum will be p = mv.

Measurement of rate of change of momentum

  1. So, force is the measure of rate of change of momentum.
  2. According to newton's second law of motion, the time rate of change in momentum is proportional to the applied force.
  3. Force, Fddtmv, where m and v are the mass and velocity of the body respectively.
  4. Thus, with the applied force we can measure the rate of change in momentum.
