Solution

Collection of Hydrogen gas:

  • Hydrogen gas can be collected by the downward displacement of water.
  • This is because hydrogen is virtually insoluble in water as it forms an explosive mixture with air, and therefore it cannot be collected by downward displacement of air, even though it is lighter than the air.
  • Hence, it is impossible to collect hydrogen gas in an air medium because the hydrogen gas is highly combustible and gets oxidized when it comes in contact with oxygen and burns with a pale blue flame producing water.
  • Also due to this reason, it is not possible to collect pure hydrogen gas.

Hence, hydrogen gas is collected by the downward displacement of water.
