Newton's third law: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

  1. If a horse wants to move forward, it will apply a pushing force on the ground in the backward direction.
  2. According to the third law, the ground will apply an equal amount of force back on the horse.
  3. This reaction force enables the horse and the cart to move forward.
