Question

If the pH of pure water is 6.5, then its temperature should be more than 293K.

Solution

Effect of temperature on pH :-

  • Temperature causes an increase in ionisation.
  • Thus, as the temperature rises, the amount of H+ active in the solution will also rise and the pH should fall (means acidic pH<7).
  • Normal assumptions assume that the temperature has increased from room temperature (293K) when neutral water's pH decreases (neutral water pH=7).
  • Consequently, the temperature should be higher than 298K when the pH of water is 6.5.
