Question

If, Thomson's atomic model is true, what would have been observed by Rutherford in his experiment?

Solution

If the Thomson model of the atom would have been correct, then the result of Rutherford's gold foil experiment would have been :

  • All of the α-particles passed through the gold foil without a decrease in speed.
  • The α particles are deflected over a wide range of angles.
  • All α-particles get bounced back by 180°angle.
  • α-Particles passing through the gold foil are deflected by small angles and with reduced speed.

Hence, above are the observation that would be observed by Rutherford in his experiment, if Thomson's atomic model would have been true.
