If you happen to go to a desert, what changes do you expect to observe in the urine you excrete? You would (i) excrete a small amount of urine (ii) excrete a large amount of urine (iii) excrete concentrated urine (iv) excrete very dilute urine Which of the above would hold true? (a) (i) and (iii) (b) (ii) and (iv) (c) (i) and (iv) (d) (i) and (ii)

a) (i) and (iii)

A desert ecosystem is hot and dry and water is lost rapidly from the body in the form of sweat. Therefore, a small amount of concentrated urine is excreted. In a desert, there is scarcity of water. So the organisms tend to conserve water by different adaptations. Similarly, we will excrete concentrated and less amount of urine to prevent loss of water from the body. The ability of the kangaroo rat and other desert rodents to produce a hyper-concentrated urine is attributed to their possession of extremely long loops of Henle, which is often quoted as an extreme adaptation for life in parched deserts.
