Solution

Electrolytic refining:-

  • It is a method used for the extraction and purification of impure metals through the process of electrolysis.
  • In this method, crude metal is used as the anode, and a strip of pure metal is used as the cathode and the soluble salt of the same metal is used as the electrolyte.
  • When an electric current is transmitted, metal ions from the electrolyte are deposited as a pure metal in the cathode, and the impure metal from the anode dissolves in the form of ions into the electrolyte.
  • Below the anode, the impurities of metals are collected, and it is known as the anode mud.

Therefore, in electrolytic refining, the impure metal is made as anode.
