Solution

Magnet

  1. Naturally occurring magnets can attract pieces of iron and certain other materials.
  2. When suspended freely these magnets align themselves along the north-south direction.
  3. The magnetic field produced by a bar magnet can be explained as the resultant field produced by the tiny current loops formed by the electrons revolving around the nucleus of each atom.

Magnetic Field Lines

  1. Magnetic field lines are imaginary lines that determine the strength and direction of the magnetic field at a given point.
  2. It travels from the north pole of a magnet to the south pole outside the magnet, while it travels from the south pole to the north pole inside the magnet, hence creating a closed loop.
  3. The magnetic field lines never intersect with each other.
  4. The tangent at any point on these magnetic field lines gives us the direction of the magnetic field at that point.
  5. The density of magnetic field lines passing through a given area gives the value of magnetic flux which gives us the strength of the magnetic field in that given area.

Hence, the magnetic field lines emerge from the North Pole and merge at the South Pole.
