Inert gases belong to which block of the periodic table?

Open in App
Solution

Inert gases:-

  • Inert gases or also called noble gases are the elements present in group 18 of the periodic table.
  • These gases are called inert because they are non-reactive in nature as they have completely filled outermost shells.
  • These elements have the general electronic configuration of ns2np6
  • Hence they belong to the p-block, except for Helium as it has 2 electrons and its electronic configuration of 1s2.
  • So, Helium belongs to the s-block.
  • The elements of group 18 are:- Helium(He), Neon(Ne), Argon(Ar), Krypton(Kr), Xenon(Xe)and Radon(Rn).

Therefore, inert gases belong to the p-block of the periodic table.
