Question

Is energy a vector quantity?

Open in App
Solution

Scalar and Vector quantity

  1. A scalar quantity is one that has no direction and just has a magnitude.
  2. A vector quantity is one that has both a magnitude and a direction.

Energy

  1. We can define energy as the work done by the body.
  2. Energy has magnitude but not direction. Therefore it is a scalar quantity.
  3. We generally call energy work done by the body.

Step3: Energy formula

W=F×d[whereW=workdone,F=force,d=displacement]

Energy is not a vector quantity. It is a scalar quantity, as it has magnitude only.
