Isotopes have the same atomic number but different atomic mass numbers:

  • The total number of protons present in the atomic nucleus is known as its atomic number whereas the mass number is defined as the total number of protons and neutrons present in the atomic nucleus.
  • Isotopes are known as the atoms of the same element having the same atomic number i.e same number of protons, but different atomic mass numbers i.e different numbers of neutrons.
  • Example: The Carbon isotopes are given as :6C11,6C12,6C13,6C14 .
  • Here, the total number of protons is the same i.e, 6 but the total number of neutrons is different in each isotope.

Hence, the statement saying; "Isotopes have the same atomic number but different atomic mass numbers", is a true statement.
