Question

It is told that acids conduct electricity in their aqueous solution due to the presence of ions. Do bases also conduct electricity due to the presence of hydroxyl ions?

Solution

Acids and bases:

  1. We need charged particles to conduct electricity. The charged particles that allow electricity to flow through metals are known as free electrons.
  2. Similarly, there are ions for electricity conduction in Acids and Bases. The ions will only conduct electricity in their aqueous form since they are mobile in this state.
  3. Acid releases H+when dissolved in water and It forms H3O+ion since it interacts with a water molecule.
  4. H+Hydrogenion+H2OWaterH3O+Hydroniumion
  5. On the other hand, bases form the OH-ion in its aqueous state.
  6. Strong acids and strong bases usually act as strong electrolytes i.e. they ionize completely.

Therefore, Acids and bases both conduct electricity in an aqueous solution.
