Solution

Explanation:

  1. This is a natural phenomenon that happens due to the refraction of light rays through the atmosphere.
  2. When the sun is going to set, refraction will affect the top part of the sun differently than the bottom half.
  3. The top half will radiate its image truly, while the bottom portion will send an apparent image.
  4. Since the bottom portion of the sun is being seen through a thicker, more dense atmosphere.
  5. The bottom image is being bent intensely and gives the impression of being squashed or "flattened" or elliptical shape.

Hence this happens due to the refraction of light rays through the atmosphere.
