Question

What are the imitations of cyclotron.

Open in App
Solution

Cyclotron

  1. A cyclotron is a machine that accelerates charged particles to high energies.
  2. Charged particles of relatively large masses are used to accelerate in a cyclotron machine.

Limitations of cyclotron

  1. Only charged particles of relatively large masses (protons, deuterons, and alpha particles) can be accelerated by the cyclotron. Uncharged particles (neutrons) can't be accelerated in a cyclotron.
  2. Material particles of small masses (like electrons) cannot be accelerated through the cyclotron.
  3. The mass of an electron is very small and a small increase in energy of the electron makes it move at a very high speed and as a result, the electrons will go quickly out of step with the vibrating electric field.
