Fats are composed of hydrogen, carbon and oxygen. They are made up of glycerol and fatty acids. 

The 4 functions of fat are as follows:

  • Fat is an important storage form of food
  • It produces energy in the body such as carbohydrates
  • Fat serves as a solvent for the fat-soluble vitamins
  • The fat lying underneath the skin renders protection to the body against a rapid heat loss
