Question

List the factors affecting electrode potential?

Open in App
Solution

Electrode potential:

  • Electrode potential is defined as the tendency of an electrode to accept or to lose electrons when placed in an electrolyte.
  • Also, the tendency of a substance to get oxidized or reduced when placed in a solution defines its electrode potential.
  • The potential of an electrode is known as the potential difference between it and the electrolyte surrounding the electrode.

The list of factors affecting electrode potential:

  • The concentration of metal ions in the solution in which it has been placed.
  • Temperature for the electrolysis process.
  • The concentration of ions in the given solution
  • Chemical nature of the metal or nonmetal used for the process.
  • The number of electrons transferred in the half cell reactions during electrolysis.

Hence, the above mentioned are the list of the factors affecting electrode potential.
