Question

List the factors on which the rate of emission depends?

Open in App
Solution

Emission:

  • Emission is known as the process of elements releasing photons of different energy and color as their atoms return to their lower energy levels.
  • The number of electrons emitted per second is defined as the rate of emission.
  • When an atom or molecule absorbs energy, the electrons are excited to an unstable higher energy level, called excitation.
  • The electron being unstable, falls back to the lower stable energy level and this process is called emission.
  • During the emission, light is emitted, having the energy equal to the higher and the lower states’ energy difference.
  • Due to the presence of multiple states of energy, an electron can undergo several transitions, each giving rise to a unique wavelength that comprises the emission spectrum.

The list of factors on which the rate of emission depends:

  • The number of electrons undergoing emission i.e more will be the number of electrons emitted per second, more will be the rate of emission.
  • Type of material from which emission is taking place i.e Lesser is the work function of the material, more is the rate of emission of thermions.
  • The temperature of the material surface i.e Higher is the temperature of the surface, more is the rate of emission of thermions.

Hence, these are the list of the factors on which the rate of emission depends.
