Solution

Magnetostatics

  1. The naturally occurring magnets can attract pieces of iron and certain other materials.
  2. When suspended freely these magnets align themselves along the north-south direction.
  3. Magnetism was a less understood phenomenon, until in 1820 Oersted discovered that an electric current produces a magnetic field.
  4. All theoretical and practical attempts to confirm the existence of magnetic monopoles have failed.
  5. All magnetic effects are associated with electric current.
  6. The magnetic field produced by a bar magnet can be explained as the resultant field produced by the tiny current loops formed by the electrons revolving around the nucleus of each atom.

Magnetic Field Lines

  1. Magnetic field lines are imaginary closed loops passing through or around a magnet.
  2. Magnetic field lines always traverse from the north pole to the south pole outside the magnet.
  3. Magnetic field lines always traverse from the south pole to the north pole inside the magnet, thus forming a closed-loop.
  4. The tangent at any point of these magnetic field lines gives the direction of the magnetic field at that point.
  5. The magnetic field lines never intersect each other as there cannot be two directions of the magnetic field at a given point.
  6. The strength of the magnetic field is determined by the density of magnetic field lines in a given area.
  7. When iron filings are kept inside a magnetic field, they align themselves according to the magnetic field lines present in the given magnetic field.
