London forces are also known as Dispersion forces.
The weakest intermolecular attractive forces are dispersion forces. The fact that low-molecular-weight, non-polar compounds like neon (Ne), hydrogen (H2) and methane (CH4) can be liquified is due to dispersion forces.
Features of dispersion force
The key characteristics of the dispersion force (London dispersion force)
- Long-range dispersion forces can be efficient from wide distances (>10nm) all the way down to interatomic distances.
- The forces of dispersion may be repellent or attractive. The dispersion force does not obey a simple power law.
- The presence of other bodies nearby affects the dispersion interaction between two bodies.
