Solution

Major pollutants produced during the combustion of fossil fuels are oxides of carbon, sulphur and nitrogen are produced.

  • When fossil fuels are burned, they release nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere, which contribute to the formation of smog and acid rain.
  • The combustion of fossil fuels like coal, petroleum, etc., not only produces energy but also produces oxides of nitrogen and sulphur like carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, oxides of nitrogen as well as smoke particles.
  • These gases accumulate in the atmosphere and lead to inhalation problems, acid rains, and an increase in the number of suspended particles in the air.
