Mendel experiment to study the mechanism of inheritance:

  1. Mendel conducted his experiments on the garden pea plant, Pisum sativum to study the mechanism of inheritance.
  2. Pea plants are usually used even by some geneticists today also, as they make a system convenient for the studies of inheritance.
  3. Peas plant useful features include their swift life cycle and the production of lots of seeds.
  4. They self-fertilize which means that the same plant produces both the egg and the sperm which come together during fertilization.
  5. Mendel had taken up the advantage of the pea plant's ability to self-fertilize to produce true-breeding pea lines.
  6. Pea plants are easy to mate or cross in a controlled manner which is done by the transfer of the pollen from the male part(anthers) of one variety of pea plant to the female part(carpel) of a matured pea plant of a different variety.
  7. Mendel removed all the immature male parts(anthers) from the flowers of the plant before the cross.
