Question

Mention the similarities and differences between mitochondria and plastid

Open in App
Solution

Mitochondria

  1. Mitochondria is the cell's powerhouse.
  2. It is an organelle that is in charge of the cell's ATP generation. This ATP serves as the cell's currency and is largely used for aerobic respiration.

Plastid

  1. Plastids and mitochondria are both involved in the production and storage of food (glucose). They're exclusively found in plants and come in a variety of colors.

Similarities

  1. Mitochondria and plasmids are organelles with two membranes.
  2. Porin protein is found in the outer membranes of mitochondria and plastids, making the outer layer more porous.
  3. Mitochondria and plasmids are dubbed semi-autonomous cell organelles because they have some of their own DNA for protein synthesis.

Differences

Mitochondria Plastid
All eukaryotic cells have this protein.
Only found in plant cells.
