Question

What is modulus of rigidity?

Open in App
Solution

Modulus of rigidity

Modulus of rigidity also known as Shear modulus is the ratio of shear stress to the shear strain. S.I. unit for the Shear modulus is N/m2. Generally, it is represented as G.

Shearmodulus=ShearStressShearStrain

Shear Stress and shear strain

Shear Stress is defined as the tangential force F per unit area A to the material while shear strain is the change in the shape of the body due to the tangential force applied on any side surface of the body.

Hence, the Modulus of rigidity is the ratio of shear stress to the shear strain.
