Question

Name an inorganic compound which has the highest lowering of vapour pressure.

Open in App
Solution

Explanation:

  • Barium Chloride on dissociation gives 2 moles of Chloride ions and one mole of Barium ions. Hence, the total number of moles of ions in the solution is 2+1=3.0.
  • Higher is the Van’t Hoff factor greater will be lowering vapour pressure.

The relative lowering of vapour pressure

  • This lowering in vapour pressure is that after the solute was added to the pure liquid (solvent), the liquid surface now had molecules of both the pure liquid and the solute.
  • The amount of solvent molecules escaping into the vapour phase gets reduced, and as a result, the pressure exerted by the vapour phase is additionally reduced.
  • This is often called relative lowering of vapour pressure.
  • This decrease in force per unit area depends on the number of non-volatile solutes added within the solution no matter its nature, and hence it’s one in each of the colligative properties

Therefore, Barium Chloride (BaCl2) is an inorganic compound which has the highest lowering of vapour pressure.
