Open in App
Solution

Spectrum lines named after the scientists who discovered them are:

  • Lyman Series: –
  1. The spectral lines produced when the electron jumps from any higher stationary orbit to first stationary orbit are called the Lyman series.
  2. For Lyman series, n1=1, and n2=2,3,4,5

The wave number is: 1λ=RH1n12-1n22

  • Balmer Series: –
  1. The spectral lines emitted when the electron undergoes a transition from any higher stationary orbit to the second stationary orbit with n1=2 are called the Balmer Series.
  2. Here, n1=2 and n2=3,4,5
  • Paschen Series: –
  1. The spectral lines produced when the electron undergoes a transition from any higher stationary orbit to third stationary orbit with n1=3 are called the Paschen Series.
  2. Here n1=3and n2=4,5,6
  • Brackett Series: –
  1. The spectral lines produced when the electron undergoes a transition from any higher stationary orbit to fourth stationary orbit with n1=4 are called the Bracket Series.
  2. Here, n1=4 and n2=5,6,7
  • Pfund Series: –
  1. The spectral lines produced when the electron undergoes a transition from any higher stationary orbit jumps to the fifth stationary orbit with n1=5 are called the Pfund Series.
  2. Here,n1=5, and n2=6,7,8
  • Humphrey Series: –
  1. The spectral lines produced when the electron undergoes a transition from any higher stationary orbit to sixth stationary orbit with n1=6 are called the Humphrey Series.
  2. Here, n1=6, and n2=7,8,9
