Question

Name different types of bond present in NH4Cl.

Solution

Types of bonds:

  1. A chemical bond is an attraction between atoms, ions, or molecules that allows chemical compounds to form. Some types of bonds are covalent bonds, ionic bonds, coordinate bonds, etc.
  2. The ionic bond is defined as a bond created by the full transfer of electrons from one atom to another. Usually, this bond is formed between a metal and a non-metal, or between polyatomic ions.
  3. The bond formed by the sharing of electrons between the atoms is referred to as a covalent bond.
  4. A coordinate bond is a type of covalent bond in which one atom shares an electron pair. or the electrons in the shared pair are from the same atom.

Ammonium chloride:

  1. It is an inorganic compound formed by Ammonium and Chloride ions.
  2. In this molecule an ionic bond is present between NH4+and Cl-because the cation ammonium (NH4+) has a single electron in its valence shell and Chlorine requires a single electron to fill its valence shell, it borrows one from Chlorine.
  3. Three covalent bonds are formed because both Nitrogen and Hydrogen are non-metals, and the bond between them is covalent.
  4. One coordinate bond is formed between one nitrogen and one hydrogen atom because lone pair of nitrogen creates a bond with another hydrogen to form NH4+.

Therefore, there is one ionic bond, three covalent bonds, and one coordinate bond are present.
