Solution

Hydrogen chloride gas:

  1. It is a colorless gas with a pungent smell.
  2. It produces white hydrochloric vapors when it comes in contact with air.
  3. It is used in making of Chlorine, aqua regia, and other chlorides
  4. It is used to dissolve noble gases as it acts as a solvent.
  5. In laboratories, it is used as a reagent.

Sulfuric Acid:

  1. Sulfuric acid is a viscous, oily liquid with a high boiling point. It is water-soluble and a component of acid rain.
  2. It is used for cleaning metals, removing contaminants from oil, and making chemicals.
  3. It is also used as a dehydrating substance i.e. A substance that absorbs water quickly.
  4. It is employed as a dehydrating agent because it has a great affinity for water and absorbs water quickly.
  5. It becomes diluted in nature as it absorbs water or moisture from the air around it, and hence has dehydrating qualities.
  6. Concentrated sulfuric acid is hygroscopic, meaning it attracts moisture and causes dryness near its surroundings.

Therefore, Sulfuric acid is used as a dehydrating agent for purifying hydrogen chloride gas.
