Solution

The halogen that is used as a germicide and disinfectant:

  • A disinfectant and germicide is a chemical substance or compound used to inactivate or destroy microorganisms on inert surfaces.
  • Chlorine is known as one of the well-known halogen elements, which is generally used as a water purifier and in a variety of chemical processes.
  • The most commonly used chemical disinfectants are known as Chlorine, Calcium and Sodium hypochlorite, Iodophor, Ethanol, and Quaternary ammonium compounds.
  • Disinfectants are known as the opposite of sterilants, which have a lower efficacy against dormant bacterial endospores. Household bleach (chlorine as sodium hypochlorite) is effective against the majority of microorganisms, including bacterial spores, and can be used as a disinfectant or sanitiser depending on the concentration.

Hence, the name of the halogen that is used as a germicide and disinfectant is Chlorine.
