The Ganges Brahmaputra Delta is the largest delta in the world. The Gangers Brahmaputra is also referred to Ganges Delta, Sunderban Delta or Bengal Delta. The three major rivers namely Ganga, Brahmaputra and Megna of the country form this huge delta.

Characteristics of Ganges Brahmaputra Delta

  • It is located in India and some part in Bangladesh in the continent of Asia
  • 23°06’N, 90°21’E is the exact location as the per the attitude and longitude
  • The area occupies by this delta is approximately 105641 km2
  • The total number of river mouths to this delta is 8
  • Major cities associated with this are Delta are Kolata and Dhaka
  • All these three rivers drain a catchment of about 1.72 million km2, at the southern side of the Himalaya
  • It the most fertile region in the world
  • Almost two-thirds of the delta is present in Bangladesh, the rest comprises the state of West Bengal, India
  • Along the coast, the width of the delta comes to be around 350 km
  • The distance from the confluence of the Brahmaputra and the Ganges to the coast is around 250 km
  • Downstream the confluence, the river is named Padma
  • About halfway of the Padma river, the river Meghna joins
  • Approximately 130 million inhabitants, the Ganges delta males its name to the most densely populated areas in the entire world (1.300 inh/km2)
