Question

Name the material that is used in the preparation of stem of the a gold leaf electroscope.

Solution

Step1: Gold leaf electroscope

  1. It is a kind of electroscope that consists of two gold leaves and is used for detecting the electrical charge of the body and the nature of its polarity.
  2. When a charged object touches the knob at the top of the rod, the charge flows through the rod onto the leaves.
  3. As both the gold leaves will have the same charge and hence as a result they will repel each other and diverge.
  4. The degree of divergence is directly an indicator of the amount of charge i.e., the more the charge, the more will be the divergence.

Step2: The applications of the gold-leaf electroscope are given below:

  • Detect charge
  • Identification of the nature of the charge
  • Identifying a body as a conductor or an insulator

Step3: The material used in the stem:

  1. In this type of electroscope, its stem is made up of brass.
  2. Brass is an alloy of two metals, copper and zinc.
  3. The combination of these two metals makes the brass solid and robust.

Thus, brass is used as the material in the preparation of the stem of a gold-leaf electroscope.
