Electronic configuration:-

  1. In quantum chemistry, the electronic configuration is actually the distribution of the electrons in the orbitals of an atom.
  2. Sodium is basically a member of the alkali metal family.
  3. A positive ion or cation is generally formed by the losing of electrons.
  4. Sodium atom (Na) has atomic number = 11
  5. So, the number of protons and electrons Sodium atom (Na) has = 11 each.
  6. So, the electronic configuration of Na atom in the different shells (K, L, M) = 2, 8, 1.
  7. So, if Sodium atom loses 1 electron to become (Na+), then the electronic configuration would be (K, L) = 2, 8.
  8. Hence, K and L shells are completely filled, which is (2, 8) and this is a electronic configuration.
