Question

On reacting NaHCO3 and Acetic acid, the gas evolved turns_____

Open in App
Solution

Reaction of NaHCO3 and Acetic acid:

  • When Sodium bicarbonate NaHCO3reacts with acetic acid, a neutralization reaction takes place and an aqueous salt of Sodium bicarbonate is formed along with the evolution of Carbon dioxide gas.

CH3COOH(l)Aceticacid+NaHCO3(s)SodiumbicarbonateCH3COONa(aq)Sodiumacetate+H2O(l)Water+CO2(g)Carbondioxide

  • The gas evolved in the reaction is carbon dioxide, which is a colorless and odourless gas.
  • When this Carbon dioxide reacts with limewater to form a white precipitate (which appears milky) of Calcium carbonate(CaCO3).

Ca(OH)2(aq)Calciumhydroxide+CO2(g)CarbondioxideCaCO3(s)Calciumcarbonate+H2O(l)Water

Therefore, On reacting NaHCO3 and Acetic acid, the gas evolved turns lime water milky.
