Question

On what factors does the value of gravitational force depend.

Open in App
Solution

Newton's law of gravitation:

  1. Every particle in the universe attracts every other particle with a force whose magnitude is directly proportional to the product of their masses.
  2. And that force is also inversely proportional to the square of the distance between their centre.
  3. Mathematically, Fm1m2r2, Where F= Force, m1,m2= masses of two different particles, r=distance between them.
Or F=Gm1m2r2, Where G= Gravitational constant and its value is equal to 6.67×10-11m3s-2kg-1.
  4. Gravitational force depends directly on the masses of the particles. If masses will increase, force also increase.
  5. Gravitational force depends inversely on the square of the distance between the particles. If distance will increase, the force will decrease.

Thus, gravitational force depends upon the product of the masses and the distance between any two particles.
