Question

One pascal is the pressure generated by

Open in App
Solution

Pressure:

  1. Pressure may be defined as the perpendicular force per unit area, or the stress at a point within a confined fluid.
  2. Mathematically Pressure P = Force F/Area A.
  3. Unit of force is newton N and unit of area is square meter m2
  4. Thus pascal or Nm2 is the fundamental unit of pressure.
  5. An example of pressure may be seen in our day-to-day life when we hold a knife to a piece of fruit.
  6. If we hold the flattened part of the knife against the fruit, it won't cut the surface. Because the force is spread over a large area (Hence low pressure).
  7. The pressure of the liquid forces the liquid to move into the syringe when we withdraw its plunger.
  8. When air is sucked out of a drinking straw, the air pressure decreases, and the atmospheric pressure outside forces the liquid to go inside the straw.
  9. A pascal may be defined as a force of one newton applied over a surface area of a one-meter square.
  10. It is denoted as Pa and defined as the force of one newton per square meter Nm2.

Thus, One pascal is the pressure generated by a force of one newton over an area of one square meter.
