P.M. is used to represent evening and not morning. The full form of P.M. is Post Meridiem. It is the Latin name for “After noon” or “After midday”. P.M is the time from noon to midnight. It is Pre Midnight or the time before midnight. For example, evening 4 o’clock is represented by 4 P.M. Night 11 o’clock is represented by 11 P.M.

12 Hours System

In most English speaking countries like Australia, Canada, USA, the 12 hour format is used to represent the time. The 24 hours in a day is divided into two halves of 12 hours each. The first 12 hour is represented as A.M. which is from midnight to noon. A.M. stands for Ante Meridiem, the Latin name for “Before midday” or “Before Noon”. An example is 11 o’clock in the morning is represented by 11:00 A.M. Morning 4 o’clock is represented by 4:00 A.M.

Confusion in the 12 hour system

  • 12 in the midnight is represented by 12:00 A.M.
  • 12 in the afternoon is represented by 12:00 P.M.

24 Hours system

In most of the European countries, a 24 hour format is used to represent the time. Till 12 in the daytime, 0 to 12 is used to represent the time. From afternoon to midnight, 13 to 24 is used to represent the time. For example 13:00 is 1 o’clock in the afternoon. In a 24 hour format, evening 5 o’ clock is represented by 17:00 and morning 5 o’clock is represented as 5:00.
