Red soils are red in colour due to presence of

  • Its red colour is mainly due to ferric oxides occurring as thin coatings on the soil particles while the iron oxide occurs as haematite or as hydrous ferric oxide. 
  • Red soils denote the third largest soil group of India. It looks yellow in its hydrated form. Red soil Seen mainly in low rainfall area. They are mainly found in the Peninsula from Tamil Nadu in the south to Bundelkhand in the north and Raj Mahal in the east to Kathiawad in the west.
  • Potato, wheat, cotton, tobacco are cultivated in the red soil.
