Question

Similarities and differences between aerobic and anaerobic respiration.

Open in App
Solution

Aerobic Respiration:

Aerobic Respiration is referred to as a metabolic pathway that releases energy after the breakdown of carbohydrates.

Anaerobic respiration:

Anaerobic respiration is referred to the metabolic pathway that synthesis alcohol and acids.

Similarities between aerobic and anaerobic respiration:

  1. As the substrate, they both start with glucose.
  2. In both situations, food oxidizes, releasing energy.
  3. During the processes, both anaerobic and aerobic respiration create byproducts.

Differences between aerobic and anaerobic respiration:

Aerobic RespirationAnaerobic respiration
1.This process happens in the presence of oxygen. This process happens in absence of oxygen.
2.Aerobic Respiration is also referred to as Cellular respiration.Anaerobic respiration is also referred to as Fermentation.
3.The location for this respiration is the Mitochondria of the cell. The location of this respiration is the cytoplasm.
4.This type of respiration can be seen in Eukaryotic organisms. This type of Respiration is seen in prokaryotic organisms.
5.The other two steps of Aerobic Respiration are the Krebs cycle and electron transport chain. The other step in Anaerobic Respiration is NADH generation.
6.From this reaction, Carbon dioxide, water, and ATPare produced. From this reaction, Acids, alcohol, and ATP are produced.
7.The number of ATPformed is 36 from 1 molecule of glucose. The number of ATP formed is 2.
8.The amount of energy produced is higher than Anaerobic Respiration. The amount of energy produced is much lower than Aerobic Respiration.
