Solution

Water helps soil formation in the following ways:

  1. Water wears stones over a long period. The small stones in the flowing water rub against other stones, forming small particles that are carried downstream and deposited as soil.
  2. Water expands on freezing. Therefore, when deposited in a rock crevice, the rock breaks into small pieces.

Thus, water is needed for soil formation.
