Question

State the effect of temperature on the density of a substance.

Open in App
Solution

Effect of temperature on density

  1. The density of a substance is defined as the amount of substance present per unit volume or ratio of mass and volume.
  2. It means the density is proportional to the mass of the substance and inversely proportional to its volume, D=mV
  3. Volume is directly proportional to the temperature which means if we increase the temperature then the volume of the substance will also increase.
  4. If the temperature increases then the volume of the substance will also increase and will decrease the density of the substance as volume is also inversely proportional to density.
  5. If the temperature decreases then the volume of the substance decreases and will increases the density of the substance.

Therefore, the density of the substance is inversely proportional to temperature.
