Question

State two effects caused by the refraction of light.

Solution

Refraction of light

  1. Refraction of light is the phenomena of bending of a light wave when it passes from one medium to another.
  2. The bending is caused due to the differences in refractive index between the two medium.

Effects caused by the refraction of light

1. An object placed under water appears to be raised.

In the first image, we can see that the image of the coin that we see is above the original position of the coin due to refraction. The light rays are bend as the enter water(different medium)

2. A pool water appears to be less deeper than it is in reality.

Here, due to refraction, the image of the base of the pool appears to be in a position that is higher than the original base of the pool to our eyes. This also happens because of the bending of light rays or refraction of light while entering water.
