Question

State two properties of high tension wires.

Open in App
Solution

High tension wires:

High tension wires are used for the transmission of electricity.

Two of their properties are:

Low resistance:

  1. As the wires need to be able to withstand high voltages with minimum heat losses, the wires should let the electricity flow through them easily.
  2. A high resistance will slow down the speed of the current and also increase heat losses, hence, it is not favored.

High-area:

  1. They need to have a higher area so that the heat is radiated to the surroundings quickly.
  2. A smaller area will mean that the heat diffusion is happening at a slow rate which is not preferred.
