Question

Take three test tubes. Fill each of them with water. Label them A, B and C. Keep a snail in test tube A, a water plant in test tube B, and in C, keep the snail and plant both. Which test tube would have the highest concentration of CO2?

Solution

Test tube with the highest concentration of CO2:

  • Test tube A will have the highest concentration of CO2.
  • Snail breathes in oxygen and releases carbon dioxide.
  • Hence, test tube A will have the highest concentration of carbon dioxide.

Test tubes B and C:

  • Since test tube B contains a water plant, it takes in carbon dioxide for photosynthesis and releases oxygen.
  • Hence, the concentration of oxygen will be more in test tube B.
  • Since test tube C contains both the water plant and the snail, the carbon dioxide produced by the snail is utilized by the plant for photosynthesis.
  • Therefore, the concentration of carbon dioxide will be less in this test tube.

Hence, test tube A would have the highest concentration of CO2.
