The boiling point of Bromoethane is higher than that of Chloroethane. Why?

Boiling point:

  • The boiling point is known as the temperature at which the liquid begins to boil or the temp at which the liquid changes into the vapour phase.
  • The boiling point increases with an increase in the surface area of the molecule, and atomic mass of the molecule but decreases with branching.

The boiling point of Bromoethane is higher than that of Chloroethane:

  • The atomic mass of Bromoethane is 108.97which is greater than the atomic mass of Chloroethane i.e 64.51and thus, Bromoethane has a higher boiling point than Chloroethane.
  • Also, the bond between CandCl is tend to be more polar than the bond between CandBr, which results in a greater boiling point of Bromoethane than that of Chloroethane.

Hence, the reason why the boiling point of Bromoethane is higher than that of Chloroethane has been explained.
