Matthias Schleiden and Theodor Schwann proposed the cell theory. According to this theory, all living beings are made up of one or more cells, and the cell is the most fundamental unit of life.
Early cell theory comprised four statements,
- Cells are the building blocks of all living things.
- Pre-existing cells are used to develop new cells.
- All cells are similar
- In living things, cells are the essential units of functionality and structure.
