The chemical formula of calcium nitrate is _________.

Open in App
Solution

The chemical formula of Calcium nitrate:-

  • The chemical formula of a compound can be defined as the symbolic representation of its chemical composition.
  • The atomic number of calcium is 20 and its electronic configuration is 1s22s22p63s23p64s2.
  • Thus according to the octet rule, we know that, if calcium needs to lose 2 electrons then its outermost shell would have 8 electrons which would make it stable.
  • On the other hand, nitrate ions have a negative charge NO3-.
  • This means the nitrate ion needs 1 electron to become stable.
  • So, the calcium atom donates its 2 outermost electrons to 2 nitrate ions.
  • This makes both the nitrate ion and the calcium atom becomes stable.
  • Thus the formula of calcium nitrate becomes Ca(NO3)2.

Therefore, the chemical formula of calcium nitrate is Ca(NO3)2
