Solution

Drying agent:

  • Drying agents are known as substances that collect moisture in the form of water vapours.
  • Hence these drying agents are added to a specific gas or solid to remove the moisture mixed with them so as to get a completely pure substance.
  • Several compounds are used as drying agents for different gases and solids i.e concentrated sulphuric acid, phosphorus pentoxide, and calcium oxide.

Drying agent for Chlorine gas:

  • Concentrated sulphuric acid is mostly used as a drying agent for chlorine gas.
  • Before the compression of the chlorine gas, a stream of dilute acid which is a combination of sulphuric acid and chlorine gas gets created which usually contains saturated chlorine gas.
  • In the final process, the sulphuric acid vapours get segregated from the chlorine gas.

Hence, the drying agent for chlorine gas is concentrated sulphuric acid.
