Question

The first law of motion is also known as Galileo's law of inertia. Explain.

Solution

Newton's First Law:

  1. If there is no net force acting on an object, the object remains in the same state of motion, this was stated by Galileo's Law of Inertia.
  2. Newton’s First Law of motion states that a body at motion will remain in uniform motion and a body at rest will remain at rest unless an external force acts on an object to change its state of uniform motion or state of rest.
  3. v=0 when the object is at rest and v0 when the object is in motion with the same speed and direction, v is the velocity of the object.
  4. This statement follows Newton's First Law of Motion.
  5. Galileo stated the law of inertia from his research with the rolling of balls down inclined surfaces on the assumption of classical mechanics.

Hence, the first law of Motion is also known as Galileo's law of inertia.
